Water-based Experiences

Taking to the water is one of the best ways we know to explore Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. Each of the islands has its own character and landscape, set amongst cobalt blue seas. Hop on a boat to get a glimpse of steaming volcanoes from afar and explore the picture postcard bays that fringe the islands. Our boat tours and excursions depart from Milazzo, if you are based on Sicily, or from any of the Aeolian Islands.

Our private boat cruises to Salina and Lipari include visits to the best-known sights, such as the Bay of Pollara on Salina and the clear turquoise water at Porticello on Lipari. They can also incorporate vineyard visits and tours of the ancient citadel in Lipari town. Panarea is the second smallest and the most exclusive of the islands and perfect for a day boat trip, with much of the most striking scenery found offshore.  Gaze out across sheer cliffs and drop-down anchor in tiny bays for heavenly swimming.

We can also arrange private boat tours to Filicudi and Alicudi. These are the least developed of the islands with a very different feel from Salina and Panarea. For those interested in conservation, we arrange guided walking tours with local experts as part of the excursion.

Boat tours to Stromboli

One of the Aeolian Islands’ most popular boat tours is the evening trip to Stromboli, the most dramatic of the Islands.  You will have an hour or two to explore the narrow lanes and streets of Stromboli town before setting sail against the backdrop of a multi-coloured sunset. The excursion travels round to the ‘Sciara del Fuoco’, the lava strip down the northern side of the island, for a view of the island’s mini-explosions and plumes of smoke as they fill the starlit sky.

Fishing trips on the Aeolian Islands

If you like the idea of fishing for your supper, our fishing trips provide an excellent opportunity to meet the locals! We can arrange any of the fishing excursions available in local waters. One of our most popular fishing excursions is an evening trip to catch totani, a red-fleshed squid, sweeter and larger than calamari, with dinner cooked up on board.  When in season, we can also organise shrimp fishing excursions.

Swordfish hunting is undertaken in boats called passarelle in the Straits of Messina. While the practice traditionally involved harpoons and wooden rowing boats, today the process is more sophisticated but can still be relatively gory.
